Just minutes away from the quaint old fishing village of Zihuatanejo are the golden beaches of Ixtapa, with modern and luxurious resorts. The best of both worlds exists in the two sister towns. Zihuatanejo with its colorful shops and quaint cobblestone streets, is just four miles away from Ixtapa where the fisherman is in paradise and the sun worshipper idly passes the day away.

Play golf on the 18-hole course, horseback to your heart's content, or play tennis at your hotel. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo offer an abundance of restaurants to choose from. All the major hotels offer fine dining and nightlife, or venture into the towns to discover new delights.

We've been to Isla Ixtapa 3 times now - the most recent just a couple weeks ago (Jan 2008). We go primarily for the snorkeling at Playa Coral. The fish are large and plentiful but you have to be there early (before 10 AM) while the water is still crystal clear. By afternoon so many people have churned up the water that visibility is nearly zero. There is also some good beachcombing - interesting driftwood and rocks - if you walk past the beach (to the right as you face the water on Playa Coral) around to the point. We've always had good food there but it is a bit more expensive than one would pay at a beach restaurant on the mainland. More annoying, we did have the experience that someone else mentioned in an earlier review - a 15% "service fee" was already added onto the bill but then the waiter claimed an additional 10 pesos above that. It's not the extra $1, but rather the negative feeling it left us with. This may be a new 'trick" because it had never occurred on our previous visits and on this trip we encountered the same thing at 2 other beach restaurants in the Zihuatanejo area.

If you are a snorkeler, I'd recommend Isla Ixtapa as an early morning trip. Get in a couple of hours of snorkeling, then head back to the mainland for lunch.
