Reviews:
“Fantastic trip for 3 couples - great time!”
Our group was three twenty-something couples. We've all been married 3 years or less. This was probably the most notable trip since each of our honeymoons. None of us have any children, so if you are bringing yours, I'm not sure that much of what I'll have to say will be of much use to you.
The short summary:
For the most part, we wanted to relax, drink, hang out. Atlantis was beyond perfect for this. We had activities to do, could relax when we wanted and got a great tan doing it. We will definitely definitely return again.
The long details:
TRANSPORTATION
Trevor Ferguson with Royality Limo was fantastic. Wonderful to work with. We had 6 adults, 8 checked bags, 5 carryons, with a stop at the grocery and liquor store.... it was a packed car. If you pack tons like we do, tell him he might want to bring the van instead of the surburban. Great guy, very friendly. $90 each way. You pay for both trips when he picks you up at the airport.
Cabs are plentiful. Expect about $4 per person for each way to town/bay street/straw market. We did this a LOT for shopping. I recommend going when the cruise boats are in town - there is a different attitude around town when the tourists are plentiful. We experienced some negativity, but only away from Atlantis.
HARBORSIDE, AS A HOTEL
This was exactly what I expected. Great room, very clean. We did not have a problem with dirty feet. We did get extra towels from the maid cart in the hall with a $ tip. Jacuzzi tub was great, beds were great, kitchen was stocked as expected. The kitchen does have dish soap now, but we were glad we brought a sponge with a scrubby side. We were very happy overall. We stayed in building 6, 1st floor - noise was not a problem. Is is however the farthest building with the MOST amount of walking. Not necessarily a negative, but when you've drank a bit, it's a long walk.
Don't forget about the hottub on site, it was a good hangout spot. We also brought home the beach towels to use on the kitchen floor ontop of the tile.
If you want to hook up your ipod to the awesome bose speakers, bring a cable and you are in business.
We own at Lagunamar in Cancun, and they invited us (only once) to come hear about the owners update. We declined and never heard of it again.
THE ATLANTIS BAD:
It was off season so lots of information was incorrect. We'll start with the bad. Half the place was closed for renovations, turtle feeding and stingray feeding was closed to the public, open times for Aura the club were also incorrect. Even though the website says jeans and closed toe shoes for club attire, my husband was denied admittance for tennis shoes and too baggy of jeans. The bouncer was incredibly rude. Half the employees that work there are happy about it, the other half won't even tell you the time if you ask.
THE ATLANTIS GOOD:
This is by far the coolest place we have ever been to. The slides on the new half were insane. You can float around on your inner tube forever without even getting out of it. The beach was great. Slides were great. The water was warm. We were out at the pools as much as possible. Grab the chairs with the moveable shade. We brought a portable ipod speaker and had a blast. The resort is safe enough to leave your stuff on a chair all day long and it not move. Overall the good far outweighs the bad and was a great experience.
The aquarium specifically the dig is amazing! We had so much fun going through them over and over. Better than any aquarium we've been to. We were able to take red party cups just about anywhere with no problem. Hotel staff often joked about why we didn't bring them one. Just explore because there is sooo much neat stuff to find.
Harborside front desk cannot help with any problems you encounter at the Atlantis. If you have a problem, go to their front desk or ask to talk to their manager. I was not brave enough to ask the 6 ft + bouncer guy for his supervisor and instead went to Harborside to complain. They said if I had just gone to the Atlantis front desk, they would have been able to do something about it. All harborside managers can do is empathize and sympathize with you.
FOOD & ALCOHOL:
We brought all breakfast/snack foods with us. The short list goes as follows. pancake mix, syurp, powdered sugar for french toast, salsa, tortilla chips, banana bread, bagels, danishs, muffins, tortillas, fruit snacks, cookies, puppy chow, oatmeal, jello, cereal, powdered koolaid mix, ketchup, mustard. At the grocery, we bought eggs, bread, lunch meat, cream cheese, bacon, sausage, milk, cheese, butter, frozen limeade, limes. At the liquor store they bought Kalik (local beer), miller, tequila, vodka, and two rums. this lasted until about Wednesday.
Keep in mind beer is very expensive in the bahamas. There's a plastic pitcher in the kitchen. We were quite happy with tropical fruit koolaid with rum, coke with spiced rum, limeade with tequila and two beers. We also made jello shots. (we brought the small cups with us) We could NOT find margarita mix on the island. After we ran out mid week, we went to the Bacardi store on Bay street and were able to buy the premixed bahama mamas and hurricane mix. Both were very good. You can also get a BIG bottle of Grey Goose vodka for $25. We'd take our cups to the pool, hot tub, buses, pretty much everywhere but inside the shops and restaurants.
Overall we split the grocery trip before we got there, when we got there, and all large alcohol purchases. It split up to about $200 per couple. So it is very possible to NOT spend $1000 on food per couple if you plan ahead. We were very happy about the money we were able to save.
MONEY
Bring lots of cash for cabs, tipping, straw market, etc. We ran out quickly. You might also let your bank know you are going out of town - one couple in our group had a problem with this. There are atms that dispense US currency - in the atlantis and the one by senor frogs worked well for us.
RESTAURANTS:
We went to lots and have good things to report!
HARD ROCK: fantastic food and drink, not busy, about $60 for 2 burgers and 2 strong drinks.
NOBU: really good food, you need reservations, about $130 for 2 adults with appetizers, veggie tempura, drinks and a dessert
DOMINOS: they deliver to the front desk and is about 20 for 2 large. however expect over an hour delivery time on a saturday night.
CASA D'ANGELO: also really good, you need reservations. We were told this was a moderate priced restaurant, but it wasn't. $140 for 2 adults with drinks and entrees.
ATLAS BAR AND GRILL: okay food, no wait, no reservations needed. About $60 for 2 burgers and 2 drinks... but that money would be better spent at Hard Rock
SENOR FROGS: okay food, strong drinks, be prepared for them to pick on you. We ended up with 12 free shots within 2 hours there. Frozen drinks in the yard glass are their specialty. About $45 per couple with food and one big frozen drink each. Next time, I'd eat elsewhere and then go there for fun and drinks after.
MESA GRILL: FANTASTIC. very very very good food. you must have reservations. For the 6 adults with steaks and a bottle of wine, $400+. Not terrible for the quality of food, but be aware that you'll spend some money here.
MURRAYS: okay food, no reservations needed, about $35 per couple with no alcohol. Please skip the mac and cheese, it was horrible. The murrays dip and meatloaf were great.
There's a starbucks at the cove and at the marina village. Cove is normal prices, Marina village.. mulitply it by 3.
All the quick bites by the pools with burgers and hotdogs were good. However, if you order the chicken basket expecting bone free chicken fingers, be prepared for deep fried chicken - it was not what was expected. We had a chicken wrap that was particularly spicy and then stuck to hotdogs and hamburgers for the rest of the trip.
